so long 03:09
I was young I had time now I'm old Jaded and hurting On my tombstone Write the word 'bitter' Cause that's what I am After so long You're gonna tumble down After so long, so long Even the mountains tumble to the ground I was bright Early one morning Now it's dark as night And these bottles I'm drowning On my tombstone Write the word 'asshole' Cause that's what I am After so long I'm gonna crumble down After so long, so long Even the mountains crumble to the ground Even the best of us crumble to the ground Even the worst of us crumble to the ground Even the tallest building crumbles to the ground

I look right behind me and what do I see but a friend that I used to know The years had been silently slipping away but the feeling had never gone cold You looked as good as I remembered you did I can't help but think of about the times we had You came up to me and said your hello and then you went on your way Ain't it funny how someone you know can end up so strange You looked as good as I remembered you did I can't help but think of all the times we had Well I look straight before me and what do I see but the old cold gray downtown street With all of these people just milling around it's so funny that we accidentally meet You looked as good as I remember you did I can't help but think about the times we had

heart cave 04:04
Darlin' you don't have to hide nothing There's a side you keep from me There are things that I don't see but I get a feelin' And a feelin' usually means something Everyone has a cave in their heart Some place where things stay in the dark You got those far away eyes what are you thinking? Nothing what are you thinking? you ask I say I asked you first There ain't no use to go on blinking If I'm just gonna waste my time Honey you don't have to hide from me Everyone has a cave in their heart Some place where things stay in the dark Everyone has a cave in their heart If you venture in to that deep dark cavern You may come to forget what you kept in there And you'll know what you do or why you do it Cause you only choose to see the light Everyone has a cave in their heart Some place where things stay in the dark Everyone has a cave in their heart Everyone has a cave in their heart

born to roam 04:05
I was born to roam but I just stay home laughing with the people hanging round this old town hear the road fall asleep to the sound Oh, do you wanna taste of hell? or do you just wanna cop a smell? live your whole life just letting the time go by I don't have a clue but neither do you what's the point just hit that join and frown pass it around don't ask me I'm just some empty clown Oh, do you wanna taste my hell? or do you just wanna cop a smell? live your whole life just letting the time go by never take a chance never even try wait around to die I was born to roam but I just stay home laughing with the people hanging round

Said the nail to the screw you ain't nothing without a tool circles they make a fool of you said the nail to the screw All you do is get struck seems a rather violent act workers arm both strong and frail I've often seen them swing and fail said the screw to the nail Said the hammer to the hand your wish is my command direct me where I am to land said the hammer to the hand How can I make this better? pages soaked and bound in leather everyday I wake up a different person how can I carry on? oh I don't know oh I don't know

empty street 05:23
Where are you now I don't know how It could be like it used to You're off in some other town Spinning head running round It's no wonder we don't get much done Distractions in your head Distractions in your bed It's like I'm talking to an empty street You wanna know where I've been Ah, well just ask me once again Yeah we'll see if I even remember Dead piano keys and a dog with fleas Now I'm just talking to an empty street Well sometimes I can't seem To speak my mind well Such a silly thing can seem so tragic Some things sound better When you're alone Just walking down an empty street What good is a song In every tone there's order I guess that's all that I can say Movement stirs the air Then fades away Leaving nothing but an empty street an empty street

about

written and recorded by Driftinwoods at Jamshackle Studios 2016

Having too much time to think, monotonous tasks at the day job underneath an open sky, jotting down things here and there, sitting down on a couch and reaching for a guitar. How does a song come together but through some exchange between intentional effort and thoughtless decisions. How many tunes did I hum? How many songs have we forgotten to finish? I told myself I was done with songwriting disgusted with the persona and the claptrap of tradition. Things got stranger and times were tough, you get dealt a one-two punch or you got wrecked and reckless wake up and face that shitty feeling of causing others pain. You lose touch with people and thoughts drift to some stale air of remembrance of who wronged who, daydreaming conversations you'll never have. That melody hit and this phrase came loaded with some simple form, the strings rang out and it felt like a thing and maybe my whole thing, or aforementioned songwriter beef, is that song forms can get weary and tired. Sick of the chorus and another refrain too many verses later what has been said? Filling form with content, or maybe it's content for the sake of form ..... I present these thoughts along with songs I tried not to think too much about. They aren't polished or perfect and decidedly so. They are of little consequence but that's ok.
